man it is GOOD to have my computer back!
i guess technically, i should say it’s good to have a new computer. my little tiny one finally died from the daily use/abuse that i put it through - basically, i had it with me 24/7, at home, at school, anywhere else, and in my backpack especially, and sometimes it just wouldn’t hibernate when i closed it, etc, so that the screen finally died. you could barely make out anything on that screen anymore, and plus, it had been dropped by a student, etc. it’s actually a wonder to me that it didn’t die earlier.
at any rate, i’m back in the land of the internet with my brand new dell inspiron 1405. it’s 2 inches larger than my last laptop and must i say it seems HUGE to me! i sorta miss my tiny one but i wasn’t about to pay twice the price for a smaller computer, plus, this one has a lot going for it, so i’m trying it out. i’m still trying to get all my settings correct - i downloaded firefox, found some decent tab extensions for it, got thunderbird, google talk, OpenOffice. so that means i have a browser, a mail client, an office program (just like word, excel, powerpoint, etc, but it’s all free and legally free!). i still have to get trillian (a chat program that integrates aim, yahoo instant messenger, msn messenger, and icq) and a few other things.
on that note, does anyone know how to uninstall msn messenger? and get rid of all the other crap that these computers get preloaded with? i’m trying to make my computer more efficient and get rid of all the programs i don’t want/need, like all those things that start up when i turn on my computer, or all the internet service provider ads built into my computer. ugh… there’s so much work to be done here!
anyways, i was gonna say that i’m happy to have a computer of my own again… soon, it will be configured the way i want it to be, and i’ll be back, posting semi-regularly =) see you soon!
1405? that model has been on my list since they’ve pulled the 600m from their product line. maybe a couple more months… i’m a little tired of hauling my XPS Gen2 around even though its screen size impresses people. mozilla apps and trillian user? i’m so happy! if only more of my friends knew the joy of using them as well as uninstalling stuff you don’t need. did you figure the uninstall msn messenger yet? if not try this Control Panel > Add or Remove Programs > Add/Remove Windows Components > Uncheck Windows Messenger (last on the list) and any other Microsoft crapware you don’t want > Next > Finish. voila! hope that helps.
Posted by james on 11/15 at 12:17 PMahhh… my previous computer -was- a 700m. a nice li’l 12” 4-pounder. unfortunately, that one got old quick with all my use.
this 14” is a beauty, tho… it’s still small, but finally, a screen large enough to watch movies on! woot!
Posted by on 11/16 at 07:44 PMoh, yeah… the 700m… that’s the one… not the 600m that i mentioned earlier. anyways, i’m sure the 14” is great mobile solution. my 17” is quite the thing to transport.
Posted by james on 11/16 at 09:24 PMbtw… the msn messenger uninstall work?
Posted by james on 11/16 at 09:25 PMyeah, i took it off my computer… the only other thing i wanna do now is steal the 1gig of ram that i have sititing in the old laptop and throw it in here to beef it up some more. dell said that i could do that without voiding my warranty if i call them and have them walk me thru the steps, so i’ll do that =) i’ll have 1.5 gigs of ram! that’s crazy…
