thankful...
i am thankful:
...that even though my mom and her cousin got into a traumatic car accident, they are both safe and home. no major injuries, which is really good considering what happened.
...for my friends and family who respond to my texts with prayers for my family.
...even though i’m hurting inside because i know that it can only get better.
...for my friends who’ll sit in a room with me not saying anything, not only cuz they know that i need company right now, but because they like to spend time with me too.
...to God for taking care of my family, and to my family for getting together for a “thanksgiving” worship -after- an accident. my mom’s family really has a great support group.
...just because.
tomorrow will be a better day. it just has to be.

congratulations, taylor!
so taylor graduated from san gabriel academy about 2 weeks ago but they had the family party last night in glendale, and that was a lot of fun seeing family out there =)
she had the chocolate dipped fortune cookies from panda inn, where she works. and my mom is just very silly and used her foil as a grill…
jordan and d’mitri don’t really know who i am, so they were suspect of me taking this picture of them. i like it cuz mom’s in the background and great-grandma is also watching over them!
andrew stayed outside with the younger kids and connor was climbing all over him (while jordan -still- wouldn’t smile for me)
my brother and josh, our first (therefore oldest) nephew.
me and taylor. congratulations to you!! you are going to have SO MUCH FUN at puc =)

hot air ballooning for my mommy's 60th birthday
the one request my mom had for her 60th birthday was that she wanted to go hot air ballooning. so our family went to temecula and had alotta fun shooting up in the air in the balloon and skimming the terrain when we were flying low.
right after we landed my brother hopped out with my cell phone and took this picture of us =)
and while i was standing in the basket this is the view of the balloon i had right above me! btw, cell phone cameras rock!

christmas in maui
i did say that my family went to maui for Christmas, right?
well, yesterday, my brother, andy, and i took kealani and kainoa up to kapalua bay to frolick in the waves…
we stopped by the side of the road and saw whales in the water. you can’t see em in this picture but this was our view of the beach that we ended up at. it’s the beach for the ritz-carlton, the one that will host the mercedes benz golf tourney on jan 1
walking thru the jungle trying to find a beach
and arriving at kapalua bay
you can’t really tell in this pic but the waves were huge!
see… they were huge! and yes… that IS what i looked like… and kainoa too! hahah…

the puen family Christmas
for Christmas this year my uncle roy decided to come to his vacation house here in maui, and he brought my grandma with him. my cousin mark (uncle herbert’s son) already lives here about 10 minutes away, and their family came out too. my dad and mom couldn’t make it but my brother, andy, and i came to join the puen family Christmas here in maui. =)
so here are my cousins and nieces and nephews surrounding my grandma outside cafe o’lei in kihei, maui
my brother and i just met our aunt jenny and her daughter carla
but the real star of this Christmas is my 93-year-old grandma jessie
here she is with most of her great grandchildren (kealani is missing from this picture, but you can see ryan, kainoa (who’s hugging her), kaili, and megan)

some pics of the family mini reunion
83 relatives showed up to the “mini” banaag reunion at uncle benny’s house in yucaipa a few sundays ago… i finally was able to take the pics off my camera, so here are a few:
perry holding jared (ate kris’s kid)
generation 2 - lola emilia’s kids - granda enchong is the oldest one alive (i think he’s the 3rd son or so...) and he’s about 93 or 94. then comes gma luisa, gma pacing, and gpa osing (and his wife)
i don’t have a good all-inclusive pic of my mom’s generation… so moving on…
generation 4 - at least those of us who were early enough to take this pic! a whole bunch showed up later
generation 5 - not too many of the next generation showed up but they ran around with a ton of energy!
ahhh… the shoes… can you tell this is a filipino gathering? =)

my dad and my mom
first attempt - trying to peek out from behind the trees…
this was a much better attempt! you can see andy’s face this time!
and a solo shot…
and the whole family back in the parking lot

uncle beny & auntie luz
they celebrated their 46th wedding anniversary this past sunday
here they are with their children behind them: ate noreen, kuya dennis, ate shirley, kuya glenn, and kuya chester
as you can see, it was hawaiian-themed. i had a dress to wear, but then when i went shopping with my students, i found this vintage hawaiian dress and ended up buying it for $7. it was so nifty cool! this is what it ended up looking like…
the rest of the family turned out in hawaiian shirts and dresses and it was really neat-o to see ‘em all colorful =)

another cousins get-together
marc, krystal, andrew, james, frederick
me, jaylene
mahalia, flo
jackie
on the way up, i said to flo, “wow… this brings back memories, taking road trips with you… next thing you know they’ll be asking us to sing special music!”
she just laughed and said, “we ARE doing special music, silly!”
so here are the “children of the king” reunited =) i don’t have any of the pictures of us when we were little, but we were dragged all over to all these churches and made to perform… we practiced on friday night and had fun trying to think of any old songs that we used to sing =)
mahalia sat in her little inflatable care bears bed and listened to us perform… she’s such a cutie!

belated birthday gifts for my mom
my mom rocks!
her birthday was last month but she was in the philippines ‘gallivanting’ with her high school classmates, so i went out to visit her this weekend to spend some ‘birthday time’ with her. in addition to eating with her, i took her out for manis and pedis:
however, i think she ended up buying me more ’pasalubong‘ from the philippines than i bought her for her birthday! in addition to the cultural-hat-that-looks-like-a-bell that she’s wearing in the top picture, she got me an outfit from the philippines, a “mestiza saya” just like i requested! i always enjoy the cultural outfits and i’ve never owned one of these butterfly sleeve ones, so she got me this great barong style one (and she said it was the most expensive present she bought at a whopping 750 pesos! ($15!!)):
it’s actually a blouse and a skirt, and the blouse flares at the bottom… but it’s still nifty cool! my mom just laughs at me and wonders why i would ever wanna wear an outfit like this but i’ve always loved dressing up in cultural garb and i look for opportunities to wear stuff like this - international day at japanese church, filipino day at filipino church, and even on halloween i’ll dress up with whatever national costume i have!
i had fun hanging out with her pampering ourselves. both of us never ever get manicures or pedicures so this was a real treat! happy belated birthday, mom!

ate kris' & kuya sean's baby shower
ate kris & kuya sean are gonna have a baby in a couple of weeks… so the family got together and had a lotta fun hanging out and having weird games where kuya glenn was cheating and everyone was laughing their heads off. it was fun… good times with family =)
kuya glenn went a little bit overboard with the baby decorations… and he was sweaty enough to have it stick on his face!!! ewww!!!!
auntie esther’s family - jenny and kedian, with their son d’mitri and daughter jordan, and judy and nathan
kami & josh, who was cool enough to go up to ed cabanatan and ask him what his name was. and kami and ate shirley (in that other picture with my cousins) were mistaken for sisters! ate’s like, um… 25 years older than her? or something like that. apparently people think that kuya garry and taylor are siblings as well… weirdness…
afterwards we went to ate nadine’s house and hung out and played cranium and stuff… here’s auntie zeny, cole, taylor, joshua, ate becky, ate donna, connor, kuya (my brother), griffin, and andy.
